“glancing over her shoulder”

In the courtyard, a girl stood watching her,
Longing in her heart for Esaly to stay.
She was Merrymine and I saw through her eyes
That last look back: Esaly’s flashing greys.

She looked with the resignation that knows
The avalanche has begun and the dam
Of destiny is undone—she was a flood.
We trembled in fear of never meeting again.
